Neighborhood Stars have made a difference in their neighborhoods. They have made Denver a better place to live by working on a cause or project to improve the appearance or quality of life in their neighborhoods.

Bill Vanderlan & David Engleken

Humboldt Street NA

Bill is President of Humboldt Street Neighborhood Association and Dave is the VP.  Both are INC delegates.

Some months ago a developer combined two adjacent 6,250 square foot small lots to build 108 micro-apartment units without any planned onsite parking.  Lots that are zoned mixed-use commercial and 6,250 square feet or smaller have been exempt from providing off-street parking since 2010. However, when lots are combined, that exemption is questionable.

So, Bill and Dave brought together several RNOs, INC’s Zoning Committee and INC delegates to oppose the development.  Bill served on the advisory committee for the moratorium and Dave organized support for improvements to the zoning language.

They were successful in getting the moratorium which applies to not only their area but to all similar developments in Denver.

They appealed a Board of Adjustment decision and also organized a delegation of about 75 people to present their opposition at City Council.

This indeed became the little neighborhood that roared through a huge organizing effort that took hundreds, if not thousands, of hours for meetings and communication efforts.

This extraordinary effort sets an example for all RNOs that strive to make Denver neighborhoods a better place to live.    Congratulations to Neighborhood Star Recipients Bill & Dave.
