There is a new practice called “sliders” who steal from people as they fill their gas tanks.  The thief waits for an opportunity to open the door when the person is watching the gas pump and they crouch low and slide the items out of the cars.  Women are the biggest target – purses in front seats.

Precautions you can take:

• Lock all but the driver door when filling tanks
• Put valuables in the back seat behind the driver seat so theft is deterred more easily.  Some women keep reusable bags on the floorboard behind the driver’s seat and store handbags among or inside one of the bags.
• Keep your handbag with you – although, unfortunately,  that also often creates yet another target for theft for the more brazen thieves.
