Denver City Council Goals for 2013
DENVER CITY COUNCIL SETS GOALS FOR 2013
The Denver City Council has established goals and action items for the upcoming year. In 2013, City Council will focus on five key issue areas:
1. Structural Finances & Efficiency
-Ensure equitable distribution of City resources and devise measures and reporting protocols. Address Denver’s structural budget gap.
2. Infrastructure & Sustainability
-Implement the City’s solid waste plan.
-Focus on Public Works needs like storm drainage and “complete streets” improvements that spur economic growth.
-Cultivate investment in neighborhood business areas and transit enhancements to promote a more connected, walkable, livable and environmentally sustainable City.
3. Libraries & Parks
-Increase library access across the City.
-Improve Denver’s Parks irrigation and maintenance.
4. Safety & Social Services
-Budget for new police and fire recruitment classes.
-Establish a 24-hour facility for the homeless and others in need in Denver.
-Adopt a Denver housing plan that addresses a broad range of housing to meet the needs of low and moderate income residents and to prevent homelessness.
-Reform the Inclusionary Housing Ordinance (IHO) to better meet Denver’s housing goals and the market conditions faced by private sector partners.
-Promote safer and more livable neighborhoods through Neighborhood Inspection Services.
5. Economic Development
-Plan for the development of the Globeville/Elyria/Swansea Neighborhood that assesses the potential for the whole area, including National Western Stock Show, I-70, neighborhood plans, Brighton Boulevard, River North development, Platte River improvements, and other potential opportunities.
-Attract good jobs to address poverty through harnessing entrepreneurial creativity and development.
-Support retention and expansion of businesses with emphasis on industrial and manufacturing enterprises.
-Promote youth jobs programs.
The City Council meets annually to establish principles to inform budget decisions and to determine areas of priority. The goals are set before the budgeting process so money in the next year’s budget may be targeted to projects supported by the Council. Council President Susman said, “These focus areas were developed by council members through thoughtful discussions and a consensus on the pressing issues and opportunities for our city and citizens.” City Council will communicate these goals to the Mayor and his agencies so that these priorities may be considered during the Administration’s planning and budgeting for the 2013 fiscal year.
