A proposal to allow short-term vacation rentals in Denver won the endorsement Wednesday night of the Planning Board, moving the controversial issue formally to the City Council.
That’s where it originated — from a task force led by Councilwoman Mary Beth Susman. Her aim over two years of meetings has been to regulate an industry that’s proliferating in Denver neighborhoods as services such as Airbnb and VRBO have caught fire, despite current law that bars rentals of less than 30 days.

“That has led the city to focus on linear parks as well as destination parks while also improving its green infrastructure,” added Amy Harmon, the founder of Denver’s Urban Market Partners and a board member of City Parks Alliance. Since 2012, the City and County of Denver, along with numerous community partners, have invested $35 million in River Vision, an initiative to re-establish the South Platte River’s natural wildlife habitat, improved water quality and created new recreational and cultural experiences in some of the city’s most underserved neighborhoods.

Community organizations representing neighborhoods in north Denver adjacent to I-70 joined the Sierra Club Tuesday in a suit to challenge new EPA guidance relied upon by the Colorado Department of Transportation to determine that increased emissions from the expanded interstate highway would not violate national air quality standards. CDOT is proposing to eventually expand the current 6 lane highway to 10 travel lanes and 4 frontage lanes.
Under EPA’s earlier Clean Air Act requirements, the project could not qualify for federal funds because it would cause particulate pollution to violate the air standards on high pollution days.
